This paragraph can make or break your entire essay- it is that important. The first sentence, I call the HOOK- how are you going to grab your readers attention and make them want to read more, the following are a few ways to do that : Emotion - happy, surprise, disgust, shock- play on your readers emotions Imagery - force the reader to “see” the scene Question- Ask a dig deeper question for the reader to answer- much deeper than the essential question Quote- especially one found “in” the DBQ- that you can relate to your reader Bold words- strong words that are not used often or are words that evoke an emotion or reaction . Words that catch the reader's attention, perhaps even make the words slightly bigger or in bold like I did with HooK Know your audience…. In this DBQ essay who is your audience, who is reading your paper, whose attention do you need to GRAB!!!!! That's right----- Ms. Wynn’s---- your teacher Intro paragraph ESSAY tips
Tips to writing a DBQ Conclusion paragraph : Don’t draw it out and don’t introduce new ideas in the conclusion. Make it short and to the point. Summarize what your main thesis and arguments were and leave it at that. Don’t try to be too clever or witty or trite and you actually don’t have to use the term “In conclusion” every time you write a conclusion. (Mind blown, I know). Your conclusion needs to connect this time period/event to a similar time period in our history or another country's history or present day results in our country or another country. For example, if our DBQ is about the revolution then ….. Try to find something similar to this in our country or if there are current issues related to this topic in our world today. CONCLUSION- Connecting sentence that lets reader know you are done and connects to your grabber sentence in intro Restate essential question Thesis sentence WORD FOR WORD Closing Hook sentence - Connecting sentence that connects this DBQ to some other event in history or current event Your coclusion needs to connect this time period/event to a similar time period in our history or another country's history or present day results in our country or another country. For example, if our DBQ is about the revolution then ….. Try to find something similar to this in our country (civil rights movement for example ) or if there are current issues related to this topic in our world today.
